Here Comes the Sun

first months with baby Jun 09, 2025

When my April baby was born, I had visions of spending maternity leave casually breastfeeding poolside while basking in the sun. In fact, we went to the pool once (pictured); and didn't make it in the water. Getting to the deck took 100% of my effort.

Despite needing a couple few extra years to acheive the vision of "summer fun with kids by the water," summer maternity leave had it's advantages - especially with a toddler in tow. Backyard picnic dinners seem easier to prep and simpler to clean up. Extended daylight and lack of Midwest snow make for nicer spontaneous (or routine) stroller walks around the neighborhood. And, while not a replacement for professional care, sunshine & fresh air are good mood enhancers (10-30 minutes of sunlight can have positive impact according to the Cleveland Clinic).

Getting ready to get out to picnic or splash?

5 Summertime Tips with a New Baby

  1. Load up on SPF fabrics

Clothing & light blankets that can shield your tiny one in the stroller, carrier, or in your arms. Sun ponchos or wraps are helpful for breastfeeding and snuggles. Big hats provide shade on the go.

  2. Know the Sunscreen recommendations

For babies younger than 6 months: Use sunscreen sparingly for skin areas that you can't cover up or shade. More detail from AAP

And if you are out in buggy areas (or times of day), here are some insect repellect recommendations from the experts.
  3. Water Safety

There are a number of Float products for babies - it's important to always be in the water with your baby, within arms reach, and avoid baby neck floats

  4. Avoid Code Brown Stress

A couple reusable swim diapers are a good (and adorable) investment if you plan to be at the pool or beach regularly.

  5. Lower your expectations & give yourself grace

It's ok (even encouraged!) to take a nap in the air conditioning. Or to put your feet in a bucket of cold water in the shade; invite a friend over and it's basically the same as going to the pool.
